Simply put, reading is the brain's ability to see (or decode) symbols and turn them into meaning. This applies to any language that has written symbols, including the English alphabet.
While hearing and speech occur naturally as most people develop, reading is a skill that must be taught. Many people are able to learn letter/sound correlations through typical instruction and translate that (with practice) into decoding written words. However, for a percentage of people, language is processed using different parts of the brain. This makes reading (and often spelling) very difficult and can lead to much frustration. People of all ages and backgrounds can struggle with reading and writing, and some might also be diagnosed with dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a language learning disability that is neurobiological in nature. It is not a measure of intelligence. Many bright, successful people struggle with two of the main features of dyslexia: decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). Thankfully, there is help to teach people with reading difficulties (including dyslexia) how to decode and encode English.
Yes. The level to which each student will be successful is as individual as each person. To be effective, specialized reading intervention must be structured, specific, and occur over time. The idea is similar to physical training, which requires precise, focused, and frequent practice to produce results.
When addressing a learning challenge of any type, it is important to provide step-by-step instructions so the student can fully grasp and remember one concept at a time. This is the therapy model utilized by Reading Help, LLC. Each student is unique, so lesson plans are tailored to the student's individual strengths and weaknesses.
